Quick answers to the questions travellers ask most.
Zanzibar is generally safe for tourists, including solo female travelers. Common issues include petty theft, persistent beach vendors, and tourist hassle in busy areas. Keep valuables secure, avoid walking alone late at night, and use registered taxis or trusted drivers. In Stone Town, it's safe during the day but use registered taxis or guides after dark.
Most nationalities require a Tanzania visa (which covers Zanzibar) valid for 90 days. Apply online via the official e-visa system at https://visa.immigration.go.tz/. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from departure. Zanzibar also requires mandatory inbound travel insurance — apply at https://inbound.visitzanzibar.go.tz/
Peak season is June to October (cool, dry). September is the best overall month. Best value months are June and October with good weather and fewer crowds. Avoid March to May (long rains, April is wettest). July-August is the busiest. For diving and snorkeling, February-March offer the best visibility.
3 nights for a quick beach break, 4-5 nights for a safari add-on plus some exploration, or 7 nights for a full island experience (Stone Town + multiple beach areas). The ideal split is 2 nights in Stone Town + 2-5 nights in a beach area.
The official currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). USD is widely accepted in tourist areas. Small local payments are easier in shillings — carry cash. ATMs are available in main towns and tourist areas.
Malaria can occur in Zanzibar. Speak to a travel clinic for advice on anti-malaria medication before arrival. Pack insect repellent with DEET, long sleeves for evenings, and mosquito nets. The risk is lower in Stone Town and main tourist areas but higher in rural regions.
In Stone Town, walking is the best option for short distances. For longer distances, use Zanzibus shuttles ($5-8), shared taxis (dala dalas at $1), or private taxis ($20-25/hour). Car rental is possible but driving is chaotic. Arrange airport transfers in advance through your accommodation ($10-30).
