Experience the Real African Bush Without Losing Beach Days

Tanzania is celebrated worldwide for its breathtaking wildlife, but most tourists staying on Zanzibar assume that a safari requires an expensive, multi-day expedition to the distant Northern Circuit.

Mikumi National Park changes everything. Known colloquially as the "Little Serengeti", Mikumi's expansive Mkata Floodplain is only a 45-minute flight from Zanzibar Airport. The open grasslands guarantee astonishingly high wildlife visibility year-round, including roaming herds of elephants, towering Maasai giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, Cape buffaloes, and prides of lions lounging beneath acacia trees.

With Spice and Sail Zanzibar, every logistical piece is handled seamlessly: your pre-dawn hotel transfer, direct bush flights, government park conservation passes, your dedicated English-speaking certified safari naturalist guide, 4x4 open-roof safari vehicle, and a warm bush lunch.

Mikumi Safari FAQs

What documents do I need to bring?

You MUST bring your physical original passport. Although Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania are one country, flights between the island and mainland pass through domestic security checks requiring passport verification.

What should I wear on a day safari?

Wear comfortable, lightweight neutral-colored clothing (khaki, beige, green). Avoid bright dark blue or black clothing which can attract tsetse flies. Bring sunglasses, a sun hat, sunscreen, and a light jacket for the early morning flight.

How far in advance should I book?

Because bush flight seat capacity from Zanzibar to Mikumi is strictly limited (typically 12 to 19 seats per aircraft), booking 3 to 7 days in advance is highly recommended, especially during peak seasons (July–October and December–February).

Is Mikumi suitable for children and families?

Yes! Mikumi is the most child-friendly safari in Tanzania because it avoids exhausting 6-hour dusty road journeys. The 45-minute flight is an adventure in itself, and the wildlife encounters are frequent and engaging for kids of all ages.
